Marine Casualty: "ANGELN"

Clyde & Co has been instructed by London market underwriters of cargo on board the vessel on a serious casualty involving the "ANGELN".

The vessel was chartered to Bernuth Agencies of Miami and German owned.  On 21 February the vessel sailed from Vieux Fort for Barbados.  Shortly after departure, the vessel developed a considerable list.  Ultimately the vessel capsized and sank during the course of the morning of 22 February.

The vessel is a 657 TEU container vessel primarily used on a service between Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana and Surinam.  We understand that her various liner operators, including Mediterranean Shipping Company, use this service and issued their own bills of lading for cargo on this vessel.  All the cargo on board is inevitably a total loss.

Investigations are already underway into the cause of the casualty.  There is an urgency involved in taking action in connection with any losses that arise from the fact that the vessel is the sole asset of the owning company.  As such, securing recovery claims must be a priority for all insurers.

If we can be of any assistance to you insofar as you insure other cargo on board, please do not hesitate to contact us.
